Kids and Health - How You Can Ensure It

Health and wellness in the 21st century have some significant problems. We're told we have an obesity epidemic, especially among children but it is not an obesity problem. It is a health problem. The kids and health challenge can be solved.
Let us look at the big picture. Two variables pop up, both of which need to be addressed, if we are to resolve the health problem with kids and adults. We need to make a commitment and take action along these two fronts. When we talk about the health of our children, we want to prepare them for healthy adulthood. We want them to live long lives without the debilitating diseases that adults currently face.
We must take action in these two areas:
For kids to be healthy, they need to learn to eat healthy food. We must minimize, if not entirely eliminate, processed foods, foods grown on nutrient depleted soils and foods that have to travel around the world before they find their way to our tables.
We need to go local, go organic and shop at farmers markets in order to keep our children from becoming junk food junkies.
If you think organic is too expensive, you can buy wholesale from nearby organic farms by forming co-ops with you friends and neighbors. It will pay dividends in your kids and health. Nutrition, at one time, came only from food, but now we turn also to multivitamins that can helps us where food falls short.
Kids nutrition should be looked at from the time they are newborns to the times they stop growing and become adults. Those needs are different, so we need to speak to those differences. Kids are growing. We want to make sure that they have the kind of nutrition to make strong healthy bones, healthy hearts and good immune systems. Infants for example, have weak immune systems which is why mothers milk helps them get started until they develop their own immune systems
We can get multi-vitamin & multi-mineral powder for infants, a chewable multivitamin for growing kids and teens love meal shakes, fast food with no guilt. But nutrition isn't a panacea for kids and health if you don't take the environment into consideration. Just look under your sink, bathroom and kitchen, how many toxic products are there.

What about your water? Check your local water? How pure is it? Kids water needs to be pure. It affects your kids and health. A water purifier is an excellent investment for your kids health.
What about cleaning products, laundry detergent? Dishwashing soap, both hand and dishwasher?

Think green. Think what will not harm your kids and their health. You can begin to make all those changes right away. Every step you take will keep your kids and health safe, you are saving their adult lives dave from debilitating diseases, osteoporosis, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes to name just a few.
Don't let your kids become junk food junkies.Improve their immune systems.Help them build healthy bones.Teaching them to eat healthy food.

Ayurveda Knowledge Is Essential for Great Health and Happiness

Ayurveda is one of the world's most used and trusted forms of alternative or traditional medicine. As you probably know, vitamin D is like the sunshine vitamin and is known for his role in calcium absorption and the prevention of rickets for a long time, but the last 5 years has seen an explosion of research revealing how appropriate this vitamin are crucial to your health.

Depositing Bone in the Bank: A Look at Bone Health and Osteoporosis

The development of strong bones is dependent on the rate of bone formation and breakdown. These events rely heavily on the amount of available calcium in your body.
A good way to understand bone health is by using the analogy of a bank with the body as the bank teller, calcium as the currency, and bones as the bank vault. In the body, calcium is required for many cellular processes (transactions). If there is no calcium coming into the bank, through your diet, some needs to be taken out of the vault to ensure there is enough to cover all bodily transactions. The process where small amounts of bone are broken down and used instead of dietary calcium is known as bone resorption.

Fortunately, foods and beverages such as milk and some orange juices are often fortified with both calcium and Vitamin D. Some food sources of Vitamin D include fish, mushrooms and eggs. Additionally, calcium and Vitamin supplements may be taken to increase bone deposit.
To help facilitate the development of strong bones, weight-bearing exercises such as walking or weight lifting are recommended since bones respond to external stresses by increasing calcium deposit which helps them become stronger.
Unfortunately, there are no warning signs of osteoporosis until a fracture occurs. Therefore, prevention is key. Risk factors for osteoporosis include:
- Female sex
- Increasing age
- Hereditary
- Smoking
- Low levels of physical activity
- Poor diet
- Low body weight
A doctor can perform a bone mineral density test to determine the strength of your bones so that you can take measures to protect yourself for the future. Some medications are also available for individuals with low bone mineral density.

An intense desire or craving for self-gratification
We sometimes want things that are not good for us. We see something very appealing, a feast for the eyes, and we long for it. But in the end it will cause more harm than good. The big juicy cheeseburgers and the ice cream get our attention. But you'd be better off leaving it alone. All that glitters isn't gold.
Gluttony
The over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink and intoxicants to the point of waste
When we do indulge in the "guilty pleasures" - don't overdo it. Don't make it a habit. Don't eat red meat or cookies every single day. Show some self-control. Moderation is the key to success. Unless your doctors advise you against it, you can eat almost anything, if you practice moderation. You don't have to eat the whole cake. You don't need that 5th slice of pizza or that second plate at the buffet.
Sloth
A disinclination to work; laziness, apathy
Come on now, we all know that we have to exercise. There's no way around it. There's no magic pill you can take that will eliminate the necessary work to maintain good health. If any pill makes that claim, (and I'm sure there are some) stay away from it because it is a scam!
You must exercise and eat right and eliminate as many of the harmful things from your body that you can. This doesn't mean you have to be a vegetarian or a yoga instructor or run a marathon. Start small. Take a walk, a short jog, eat more fruits and vegetables, and stop smoking. You must take a proactive approach with your health. Sitting on your butt, being a couch potato and eating junk is not the answer.
Envy
Spite and resentment at seeing the success of another
Don't be angry because your best friend, who has 4 kids, stays so fit. Or that you look worse than your next door neighbor who is actually 15 years older than you. Unless you use it as a motivator, envy is useless and dangerous. If you want something that someone else has, then go for it. People aren't healthy by accident. "good genes" and heredity only go so far. You too can be just as beautiful and slim and fit as the person you're envious of. It won't be easy. But most things worth having rarely are.
Wrath
Intense anger or belligerence caused by a real or supposed wrong
One of Newton's laws of motion is "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." So imagine when a person does harmful things to one's body by smoking, drinking, eating poorly and not exercising. The result will be WRATH from your own body, in the forms of heart attacks, strokes, obesity, cancer, diabetes, etc.
Years and years of neglect and abusing your body has come back to haunt you. And now it's time for payback. And the sad thing is that you are only hurting yourself. So do everything you can to avoid this. Treat your body right and your body will treat you well
Ignorance
Lack of knowledge, unaware
They say, "What you don't know won't hurt you". In this situation that is absolutely false. In this case, ignorance could get you killed. You want to know as much about your body as you can. We can't claim "ignorance" on many things. But sometimes we avoid what we should be doing and choose to do what we should not. We all know smoking is terrible. The surgeon general warned us about the hazards decades ago and now it's common knowledge. Smoking remains as the single most preventable cause of death in America. 1 out of 5 American deaths can be attributed in some way to smoking,
We know that eating too much salt, fat and sugar is bad for our bodies. This excessive intake can lead to heart attack, diabetes, obesity, etc. 1 out of every 5 deaths is from a heart attack. Coronary heart disease is listed as the leading cause of death in America. Approximately 1,200,000 new and recurring heart attacks occur each year, with 38% of those not surviving the attack. Stroke is the third leading cause of death.
Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death of Americans. Approximately 1 in 3 Americans will develop a form of diabetes within their lifetime.. 90 to 95% of diagnosed cases of diabetes are Type II, a type of diabetes that usually strikes people who may be overweight and inactive. So we need to know enough and care enough about ourselves to make the right decisions and live healthier. Remember that knowledge is power.
Pride
The name of the emotion that refers to a strong sense of self-respect, to the point that you feel superior to others. This sin is very dangerous. Many people fool themselves into thinking that no harm could possibly come to them. Some believe they are indestructible. Then reality hits them and they are shocked. Illnesses and diseases can affect anyone at any time, even healthy people.

Explaining Vaginal Health

Vagina health


Vaginal health will be one of the main concerns of any woman after reaching puberty. A healthy vagina contains normal bacteria called vaginal flora, which is important to the health and well being of all women.


Vaginal flora:


Vaginal flora of a normal asymptomatic reproductive-aged woman includes multiple aerobic or facultative species as well as obligates anaerobic species. Of these, anaerobes are predominant and outnumber aerobic species at an approx ratio of 10 to 1.


The function of and reason for bacterial colonization of the vagina remains unknown. Bacteria does exist in a symbiotic relationship with the host and are alterable, depending on the microenvironment. These organisms localize where their survival needs are met, and have exemption from the infection-preventing destructive capacity of the host.


Within this vaginal ecosystem, some microorganisms produce substances such as lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide that inhibit non-indigenous organisms. In addition, several other antibacterial compounds, termed bacteriocins, provide a similar role and include peptides such as acidocin and lactacin. Moreover, some species have the ability to produce proteinaceous adhesions and attach to vaginal epithelial cells.


For protection from many of these toxic substances, the vagina secretes leukocyte protease inhibitor. This protein protects local tissues against toxic inflammatory products and infection.


Vaginal pH:


Typically, the vaginal pH ranges between 4 and 4.5. Although not completely understood, it is believed to result from Lactobacillus species' production of lactic acid, fatty acids, and other organic acids. In addition, amino acid fermentation by anaerobic bacteria results in organic acid production as does bacterial protein catabolism. Glycogen present in healthy vaginal mucosa is believed to provide nutrients for many species in the vaginal ecosystem. Accordingly, as glycogen content within vaginal epithelial cells diminishes after menopause, this decreased substrate for acid production leads to a rise in vaginal pH


Several other events predictably alter lower reproductive tract flora and may lead to patient infection. Treatment with a broad-spectrum antibiotic or menstruation may result in symptoms attributed to inflammation from Candida albicans or other Candida species. Menstrual fluid also may serve as a source of nutrients for several bacterial species, resulting in their overgrowth. What role this plays in the development of upper reproductive tract infection following menstruation is unclear, but an association may be present.


Evaluation of a patient with vulvar and/or vaginal symptoms requires a detailed history and physical examination, including inspection of other mucosal and skin surfaces. Specific questions regarding symptoms of vulvar or vaginal pain, itching, discharge, and previous infections should be elicited. Sexual activity, the use of feminine hygiene products (douching, soaps, perfumes), and medications (oral contraceptive pills, antibiotics) can alter the normal vaginal flora. Any underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, can impact the development of certain vulvovaginal disorders. Overlying garments made of synthetic fabrics that retain heat and moisture can exacerbate vulvovaginal symptoms.


The first symptom of vaginal irritation is often vulvar pruritus, which often results from contact with vaginal discharge. Any variance from the normal, physiologic milky vaginal discharge should be noted. Before menarche, a scant vaginal discharge occurs that normally does not cause irritation and is not considered abnormal. Inspection in the adolescent girl may reveal a small amount of white mucoid material in the vaginal vault that is the result of normal desquamation and accumulation of vaginal epithelial cells. The most common cause of leukorrhea (vaginal discharge) is a vaginal infection. The presence or absence of odor, pruritus, and the color can help determine the etiology.


After the clinical history is obtained, the vulva, vagina, and cervix should be thoroughly inspected


Bacterial Vaginosis (BV):


This common and complex clinical syndrome reflects abnormal vaginal flora, and is poorly understood. It has been variously named, and former terms include Haemophilus vaginitis, Corynebacterium vaginitis, Gardnerella or anaerobic vaginitis, and nonspecific vaginitis.


For unknown reasons, the vaginal flora's symbiotic relationship shifts to one in which there is overgrowth of anaerobic species including Gardnerella vaginalis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mobiluncus species, Mycoplasma hominis, and Prevotella species. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is also associated with a significant reduction or absence of the normal hydrogen peroxide-producing Lactobacillus species.


Treatment: -Metronidazole (500 mg orally twice daily for 7 days)


-Metronidazole gel 0.75%(5 g intravaginally once daily for 5 days)


- Clindamycin cream 2%(5 g intravaginally at bedtime for 5 days)


Analgesia with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or a mild narcotic such as acetaminophen with codeine may be prescribed. In addition, topical anesthetics such as lidocaine ointment may provide relief. Local care to prevent secondary bacterial infection is important.


Patient education is mandatory and specific topics should include the natural disease history, its sexual transmission, methods to reduce transmission, and obstetric consequences. Acquisition of this infection may have significant psychological impact, and several websites provide patient information and support.


Women with genital herpes should refrain from sexual activity with uninfected partners when prodrome symptoms or lesions are present. Latex condom use potentially reduces the risk for herpetic transmission.


Fungal Infection:


This infection is most commonly caused by Candida albicans, which can be found in the vagina of asymptomatic patients, and is a commensal of the mouth, rectum, and vagina. Candidiasis is seen more commonly in warmer climates and in obese patients.75% of women will experience an episode of vulvovaginal candidiasis. Additionally, immunosuppression, diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, and recent broad-spectrum antibiotic use predispose women to clinical infection. It can be sexually transmitted, and several studies have reported an association between candidiasis and orogenital sex


The typical vaginal discharge is described as a cottage cheese-like discharge. Vaginal pH is normal (less than 4.5).


Treatment: Intravaginal agents:


- Butoconazole(2% cream5 g intravaginally for 3 days) or (5g once)


- Clotrimazole(1% cream, 5 g intravaginally 7 to 14 days)or(100 mg tablet intravaginally for 7 days)or (100 mg tablet intravaginally, 2 tablets for 3 days)


- Miconazole(2% cream, 5 g intravaginally for 7 days)


- Nystatin(100,000-unit tablet intravaginally for 14 days)


- Tioconazole(6.5% ointment, 5 g intravaginally once)


-Oral agent:Fluconazole 150 mg oral tablet once


Women who have four or more candidal infections during a year are classified as having complicated disease, and cultures should be obtained to confirm the diagnosis. Non-albicans candidal species are not as responsive to topical azole therapy. Therefore, prolonged local intravaginal therapy regimens and addition of oral fluconazole, one to three times a week, may be required to achieve clinical cure. Primary treatment for prevention of recurrent infection is oral fluconazole, 100 to 200 mg weekly for 6 months. For non-albicans recurrent infection, a 600-mg boric acid gelatin capsule intravaginally daily for 2 weeks has been successful.


Oral azole therapy has been associated with elevation in liver enzymes. Thus, prolonged oral therapy may not be feasible for that reason or because of interactions with other patient medications such as calcium channel blockers, warfarin, protease inhibitors, trimetrexate, terfenadine, cyclosporine A, phenytoin, and rifampin. In these cases, local intravaginal therapy once or twice weekly may give a similar clinical response.


Scented soups and shower gels exacerbate the problem rather than cure it and so all you're doing is temporarily masking the smell and setting yourself up for a worse fall later. Instead of using these things for vaginal odour, you should instead consider the benefits of using natural products. Herbal soaps may be a very useful addition to your hygiene arsenal.

Composed of mixed globular proteins derived from whey; whey protein is actually a by-product of cheese production, (the liquid material). The Latest in Health Care Today

In the latest current healthcare news, there is a bid to allow antibiotics to treat humans, which would lessen drug resistance, according to the US FDA. There has been a recent ban on a variety of cephalosporins in a variety of animals that produce foods. Last Wednesday, the FDA stated that on April 5th, 2012, the prohibition intends to be realized. Basically, the ban will be extended in order to quell what the group calls "extra label" cephalosporins in pigs, turkeys, chickens, and cattle.
The use of a variety of antibiotics in the aforementioned animals, whether used to prevent diseases, to diminish growth, or for a variety of treatments will let bacteria that might otherwise be resistant develop from the animals and spread to humans. Cephalosporins belong to one class of antimicrobial drugs that can be used to counteract infections in different areas of the body, namely lungs, ears, throat, skin, and sinuses. Furthermore, many doctors are prescribing them for treating various diseases, some of which include pneumonia, urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, and tissue infections. Written in the Blood: Why Wait?

A timely diagnosis can be all that stands between life and death. A patient presenting with fever, fatigue and aches may be suffering from a systemic infection, potentially requiring immediate treatment. The most appropriate treatment will depend on the nature of the infection, but this is not always immediately apparent. Turning to the diagnostic toolkit, there is the option of blood culture - if the physician suspects a bacterial or yeast infection, blood is taken from the patient, and incubated under conditions that allow certain microbes to grow. If growth is observed, further tests are performed to determine the type of organism present, and its sensitivity to antibiotics. The whole process may take up to a week, seven long days that the worst afflicted may not have.
Two years ago, Ying Taur, a physician at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, reported that the time taken to positively identify a blood culture was associated with increased mortality in hospitalised cancer patients with fungal infections (published in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy; Taur et al. 2010 Jan;54(1):184-90). In the same study, the authors stressed the need for a swifter alternative to blood culture, to save lives. Now, thanks to work conducted by Ting-Yu Liu, Yuh-Lin Wang and their colleagues at Academia Sinica, Taipei, we have taken a large step towards that alternative.
In a paper recently published in the journal Nature Communications (Liu et al. 2011 Nov 15;2:538), Liu and Wang describe a technique to capture bacteria from blood samples, in such a way that they can be directly analysed by spectroscopy. This builds on earlier work, which demonstrated that different types of bacteria could be distinguished by a spectroscopic technique: surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.
Traditional Raman spectroscopy involves shining a light on the sample to be analysed. Photons (light particles) are absorbed, and subsequently re-emitted by the sample - some of these secondary photons possess a wavelength different to that of the originals. This "inelastic" (referring to the change in wavelength) scattering of photons is known as Raman scattering. The emitted photons are collected with a lens, and any photons with a wavelength close to the originals are filtered out, leaving only the Raman signal. From the change in wavelength observed in the Raman signal, information about the molecular structure of the sample can be gleaned. As the name suggests, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (or SERS) uses a special surface to enhance the Raman signal, typically molecules adsorbed (adhered) to a rough metallic surface.
Together with collaborators at National Taiwan University, Liu and Wang coated a SERS substrate with the antibiotic vancomycin (Van), which binds to the bacterial cell wall. Bacteria are concentrated into the Van-coated region, resulting in a thousand-fold increase in capture. Importantly, Van-coating does not substantially affect the Raman signal of the bacteria tested, and it also dramatically increases the SERS signal. The authors speculate that this increase may arise from Van pulling the bacterial cell wall towards the metallic substrate, thereby filling up the gaps that exist between particles on the metal. These gaps act as 'hot spots' for the enhancement of Raman scattering, and therefore bringing the bacteria close to these sites may account for the greater signal. The Van coating also decreases the affinity of blood cells to the metallic surface, while increasing the affinity of bacteria. This study also demonstrates that VAN-resistant and susceptible bacteria produce different Raman signals in this system, leaving open the prospect of rapid determination of antibiotic sensitivity.
The implications of this rapid detection system are far-reaching: the authors note that with minor modifications, the protocol could be adapted to capture virus particles as well. Furthermore, this protocol enables researchers to concentrate bacteria from not just blood, but any environmental sample. As we are unable to culture all but a fraction of bacterial species, such Van-capture technology may expedite our ability to not only identify new bacterial species by genome sequencing, but also to swiftly identify contaminating organisms within drinking water.

Why an Evolutionary Response That Helped Us Survive Is Now Compromising Our Health

Have you ever noticed that before a big exam or visit from the in-laws your nose starts to run, your head starts to ache and you begin to fall 'under the weather'? This is not a coincidence or bad timing, but rather a manifestation of the intricate relationship between stress levels and health.
This relationship is based on an evolutionary response that is called the fight or flight response. This adrenaline-based response occurs automatically when we perceive danger, and was actually very useful back when we were hunting and gathering our food. We would see a threat (or target, depending on how to interpret it) such as a lion and our bodies would respond by elevating heart rate and breathing, dilating the pupils, narrowing our focus and shunting blood away from our extremities (so we won't bleed to death if our hands get cut). This response was preparation for what would happen next: we would either fight the lion, or run away from it (flight).
The problem is that these days we don't face similar dangers on a daily basis, yet we still have this evolutionary response hard-wired in us. During the fight or flight response, our body puts functions such as digestion and immunity on hold since they are not necessary for fighting off an external threat. Furthermore, this response is activated by both the nervous system and the hormonal system so that hours after the perceived threat is gone, stress hormones linger in our bodies. So now when we perceive things such as public speaking, school, work or family as something scary, we have an exaggerated and lingering stress response and a greater susceptibility to infection and sickness. This is why you get a dry mouth and cold hands when you have to make a major presentation, or find yourself getting sick during important (yet stressful) life events.
Something as simple as going for a routine check-up with your doctor can set the fight or flight response in motion. Many people have "white-coat syndrome" where they will have a normal blood pressure on the way to and from the doctor's office, but when they go inside their blood pressure sky rockets. Fear of bad news, anxiety of getting a needle or removing clothing for a check-up are all very real things that can trigger an intense bodily response.
Now imagine if you were always on edge and just couldn't relax. Your blood pressure would be high all the time, your heart would be working overtime, your digestive system would not be able to properly consume the nutrients your body needs, and you would be taking a lot of sick days! This is a formula for disaster and can put a serious damper on your well-being.
So try to indulge in at least one thing each day that is going to make you happy, whether it's reading your favorite novel, enjoying your favorite latte or taking a nap in your favorite pjs. And be sure to take a chill pill once in a while!

Refrigerators and Freezers Are Conveniences - Use With Care to Preserve Health

Home refrigerators and freezers are great conveniences:Everyone will want to enjoy its use. However, as these appliances have become almost standard use items in affluent societies, we need to look at their possible downside also, since this has substantially changed our eating habits and life style. We need to ponder over usage of these appliances to ensure that while we enjoy such conveniences we do not hurt or harm our health by its use. Let us look at some of these risks one by one.
Risk of accidents: Risks of accidents are rare but they do happen. The examples of such risks are, accidental tipping the fridge by young children and crushing them when they try and hang on to its handle. Accidental trapping of very small children in the abandoned fridge is also known to happen while playing. Occasional risk of fire due to electrical accident is also known. These are all avoidable by taking appropriate precautions.
Environmental risks:These appliances use chemicals like hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) or hydro-fluorocarbons (HFC) as coolant. These cause environmental hazard by depletion of ozone layer. These chemicals may also seep into drinking water if not dumped properly.
Short term health hazards: Only until about a hundred years ago or even less, our ancestors were used to cook the food fresh everyday and consume it promptly the same day. Keeping cooked food for more than a day or two was considered unhealthy. Leftover food at room temperature will grow food borne bacteria and fungus, will go rancid and will become health hazard. Bacterial growth may also collect toxins and cause the consumer to have intestinal and systemic problems. Listeria bacteria are known to remain alive in food at fridge temperature of 40 degree F (4 degree C), causing indigestion and intestinal problems, particularly in pregnant women, sick patients, children and old people with weaker immune system.
Long term health hazards due to loss of nutrition:Until a few decades ago the seasonal vegetables were locally grown and were available to people. With communication revolution and distances becoming smaller, these days the vegetables and pre-cooked foods come from afar. Sometimes such foods travel a few thousand miles by ship or by air, deep frozen for days or months and sent to other countries. It is a great blessing that whole world can enjoy fruits and vegetables any time during the year and not necessarily only during its season. But such deep frozen foods lose their nutrition value due to loss of micronutrients and vitamins being destroyed, caused by elapse of time and use of preservatives. Every so often we hear about recommendation of supplements of vitamins and minerals, which mostly is result of such long time between the production and use.
Change of Life style: The refrigerators and freezers have changed the way we live. Freezers have added to the convenience of doing grocery in bulk every few days and keeping it frozen at home. Our ancestors used to eat only fresh because there were no fridges then and hence no leftover foods. I remember my father's generation would eat their food immediately after it was cooked. In fact the home maker women will wait to cook Chapatti until the bread earner men will come home from work and feed them with freshly cooked meals. Even one day's stale food was usually not used. Now we eat food from fridge cooked even a week old and consume gradually over a few days. This has distinct risk of bacterial growth and loss of nutritive substances.
Precooked ready to eat food:In Western world, where the home maker is also working and there is not enough home help to cook fresh every day, stale food is warmed and offered as a routine. Readymade food from super markets are cooked at times in some different country, deep frozen, marked as "fresh before" such and such date and we buy them all the time. We put in it our fridge at home and consume it within the given time on the label. Such foods must be stored at zero degree F (-18 C) or lower.
Here are some simple recommendations:
· Eat fresh and raw food ONLY, if possible.
· Clean fridge every so often.
· Keep thermometers in fridge and freezers to monitor temperatures.
· Eat the food left in fridge as soon as possible and discard if in doubt.
· Keep the food in fridge covered and keep space between foods.
· Heat food to more than 71 degree C when using food from fridge to ensure bacteria are killed.
Remember what Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.) said; "Let Food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food".

What Your Urine Says About Your Health

When you go pee, you are probably not thinking about what this activity may reveal to you about your health or well-being. However, it does not hurt to pay attention to details, such as how often you go, color, odor and any discomfort during the process. These could all be subtle indicators that something is wrong.
Pale or Weak
Light colored urine with no or very little odor is usually a result of heavy water intake. As a rule, this is the one type of pee that is nothing to worry about medically. You will probably notice an increased frequency of bathroom breaks under these circumstances, but other than the inconvenience, it is nothing to worry about.
Sweet Odor
Have you noticed a sugary sweet odor when you use the bathroom? If it is not coming from your air freshener, you will want to pay attention. Urine is not supposed to smell sweet and this could be an indicator of a serious medical condition. Generally, this can mean that blood sugar is being excreted through the urine, which is a common indicator of diabetes. Your doctor will want to run further tests if you are noticing sweet-smelling urine.
Weird Odors
Strange odors from urine can be a little concerning; however, it is probably a result of something you ate. Specific foods can result in weird urine odor, most notably asparagus. Foods like this, when broken down, release a sulfur containing amino acid. As a rule, the odor will clear up as soon as the food has completely cleared the body.
Tea Colored
Extremely dark urine can be an indicator of dehydration or in some cases blood. Kidney and bladder infections can cause some bleeding which will pass through the urine, as can cancer. When your pee is dark drink several glasses of water and check again, if it is dehydration it should begin to clear otherwise make a doctor's appointment.
Fluorescent
Do not be alarmed if you have neon, yellow colored urine. In most cases, you need to look no further than your daily multivitamin. Beta-carotene is well-known for brightening the pee and usually means most of the supplement is passing through the body, though you are probably absorbing some nutrients from them. If you are really concerned, stop taking the vitamins for a few days and see if the problem persists.
Blood
Bright red blood in the toilet or on the toilet paper is a very scary experience, and it can be a serious issue. This is a common sign of a urinary tract infection, but it is also one of the main signs of bladder cancer in both women and men. Regardless of what you think may be the cause; blood in the urine should never be taken lightly. Schedule an appointment with your physician as soon as possible.

Your kidneys and bladder are aging right along with you, which means there may be some frequency changes. On a serious note, men who notice a weak urine stream and frequent urges should see their doctor; an enlarged prostate could be the root cause.
Leaky Pipes
Another commonly advertised urinary problem is leakage. This can happen when the pelvic floor becomes weakened through stress of childbirth, though even those who have never had children may experience this problem. When the floor is weak, exercise, gymnastics and even coughing or sneezing can result in a small amount of leakage. What Water Is Safe To Drink?

Well it isn't tap water. This I can assure you.
Most of our water infrastructure was built over 100 years ago! That's why you hear of a water main break all the time. You're dealing with pipes that were built during the civil war era. Those old pipes corrode and leach toxic substances in the supply. Millions are spent trying to "improve" the system and Americans assume their water is safe to drink.
Unfortunately, this trust appears to have been misplaced, as various environmental studies has revealed tap water is inadequate at best and toxic at worst. There are literally hundreds of chemicals and carcinogens that can be found in tap water. There are over 30,000 different pesticides that can be leaked into the groundwater yet most water systems are only testing for approximately half a dozen of these chemicals. Traces of illegal and prescription drugs have also been found in tap water.
With the thousands of pharmaceuticals that are flushed into the sewer systems, leaking into our water sources, tap water has been shown to contain traces of anti depressants, hormones and many other unwanted chemicals. Chemicals that are used to treat water supplies such as fluoride and chlorine are toxic substances that can poison humans if taken in large enough quantities. Many of the chemicals found in drinking water are known to cause birth defects, cancer, nerve damage and even sterility.
So, what water is safe to drink? Is it bottled water?
No. Experts insist bottled water is no better than tap water. Plastic bottles leach toxic substances into the water such as BPA and phthalates. BPA mimics sex hormones in your body and has been effectively linked to early puberty, lowered sperm count, hardened arteries, breast cancer and behavioral problems. Phthalates interfere with the endocrine system and has been linked to liver cancer, ADHD, autism and much more.
The bottled water market generates billions in profit every year, which is why marketers are happy for people to believe it is a healthier alternative to tap water. A recent study of independent experts found bottled water to contain contaminants such as carcinogenic compounds, arsenic and bacteria. The group also discovered that as much as 40% of bottled water in America comes from the exact same water system that supplies a person's tap.
Also messing up the water supply that most people don't realize is fluoride.
For years, people have believed that fluoride brings about health benefits, but medical research shows this to be untrue. Many places in North America use fluoride in their drinking water, but much of the population is unaware of the potential problems that this can create. As of late, many counties in the U.S. are now starting to come to their senses and are urging local lawmakers to ban the use of fluoride. Europe banned fluoride from their water supply decades ago so why are we still using it?
Studies have shown that fluoride can damage the human brain in a similar fashion to dementia. It can also affect thyroid gland function, which can lead to weight gain and depression. Do not give fluoridated water to babies!
So, what water is safe to drink?
Preferably you should drink fresh groundwater. But most people don't have that option. Experts encourage people to drink filtered tap water. This can be done cheaply and easily by attaching a filter to the faucet. Other ways like reverse osmosis and whole house filters work better but are expensive. With a faucet filter you can effectively get rid of the major toxic substances

According to longevity researchers, it may be to act like you live somewhere else. It seems like every year another country's lifestyle is touted as the new magic bullet to cure us of obesity, heart disease, and premature death: For an unclogged heart, herd goats and olive oil down like a Mediterranean. Avoid breast cancer and live to 100 by dining on tofu Japanese-style. Stay as happy as Norwegians by hunting elk and foraging for cowberries.
The places we're usually told to emulate are known as Blue areas or Cold Spots. Blue areas were pinpointed by explorer Dan Buettner and a team of longevity researchers and are described in his book The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who've Lived the Longest. They're areas in Italy, Japan, Greece, California, and Costa Rica where the people have traditionally stayed healthy and active to age 100 or older. Similarly, Cold Spots, as identified by integrative medicine physician Daphne Miller, MD, author of The Jungle Effect, are five areas in Mexico, Iceland, Japan, Greece, and Cameroon with low rates of "Western" branch like heart disease, depression, and certain cancers.
Now I'd like to eat my way to a long life, but I'm not about to start foraging for raw plants-I live in Brooklyn. I admire the vascular supremacy of Mediterranean folks, but I doubt I could completely replace butter with olive oil and chips with nuts. My kids would mutiny.
But it's crucial that we all try, says David l. Katz, MD, founding director of the Yale Prevention Research Center: "The Centers for Disease Control has projected that one in three Americans will have diabetes by 2050." Message received! So I took a look at a few key regions to see which suits we Americans could make our own.
French women stay slim with small portions
According to the best seller French Women Don't Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano, the paradox of how French women consume butter and cream without gaining can be explained in two words: portion control. They have small amounts of fresh, quality food and antioxidant-rich wine, lingering over multiple courses and savoring every bite.
French women also tend to walk everywhere instead of attempting to get to the gym. "In France, they climb stairs." "Many of the buildings are older and don't have elevators," says Steven Jonas, MD, professor of preventive medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine in New York and co-author of 30 Secrets of the World's Healthiest Cuisines. Moreover, the price of gas is a lot higher, so people are motivated to walk instead of drive. All of this adds up to French women having a low incidence of heart disease and obesity (12% compared to the U.S.'s 36%).
I admire the French "food is the focus" idea, in theory. If only I could while away the afternoon strolling from bakery to cheese. But as a working mother of two teenagers, I scramble to pull off a 30-minute meal. And that's OK, Dr. Jonas says: "Even if it's quick, a homemade meal with whole ingredients is better than going to a restaurant with huge portions and empty calories."
